Remember when the Cyclone ticketbooth said “How Sweet It Is”? Today is the birthday of Brooklyn-born Jackie Gleason and in honor of his signature line, we looked for photos. The only ones we could find are from 2009 of a bride and groom who stopped traffic on West 10th Street to kiss in front of the famed roller coaster.
Along with “And awaaay we go!,” the phrase “How sweet it is!” was Gleason’s trademark and the title of his biography. And it remains our favorite of the sayings that have been emblazoned on the front of the ride over the years.
I believe the address he used on the Honeymooners is the address he grew up in. In front of the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan, TV Land (cable TV channel) placed a bronze statue of Ralph Cramdon in front of it. There is a bus depot in Brooklyn named after him (Gleason or Cramdon, don’t remember which)
Bruce, the address he used in the show was 328 Chauncey St, which was his address in Brooklyn, where he grew up. However it is not in Bensonhurst where they said to have lived in the show. Also the telephone number they uesed was Bensonhurst 0 – 7740. The bus depot is the Jackie Gleason Depot.
My telephone number when I was growing up was COney Island 6 – 5234 and my dad was a bus driver.
