Sweet Potato Fries

Did you know that Ruby’s Bar & Grill, the legendary watering hole on the Boardwalk, has sweet potato fries on the menu? Neither did we until a few weeks ago. Now it’s our fave after-work snack. Delicious with an ice cold beer at the bar made of vintage Boardwalk wood. Ruby’s remains open through the fall and part of the winter. Check their Facebook page for current hours of operation.

Williams Candy, Coney Island

Williams Candy, Coney Island’s last remaining Mom and Pop candy shop since Philips lost their space in Stillwell Terminal and moved to Staten Island, has been on Surf Avenue for 74 years. Their homemade marshmallow treats and candy apples are the quintessential Coney Island dessert after a hot dog at Nathan’s Famous, which is next door. Our favorite is their Caramel Marshmallow Sticks with Toasted Coconut and Chocolate Caramel Marshmallow Sticks with Chocolate Sprinkles! They sell ice cream cones and cotton candy, too.

With Surf Avenue morphing into a mecca for corporate chains and franchises like It’Sugar, Applebee’s and Johnny Rockets, we were happy to see the old-fashioned Williams get a shout out from mega food site The Daily Meal in “24 Best Boardwalks for Food in the U.S.” Fellow Mom & Pops Ruby’s Bar on the Boardwalk and Plaza Mexico Dona Zita on the Bowery also got a mention in the slideshow, which featured Coney Island as number one among 24 boardwalks.

Joey Clams, New Chief Clam Shucker at Nathan's Famous

Joey Clams is baaack! He’s the new chief clam shucker at Nathan’s Famous new clam and oyster bar at Surf and Stillwell in Coney Island. “They call me the mothershucker,” quipped Joey, who started working there this week.

Joey was the affable manager of Gyro Corner when it was on the Boardwalk and had a clam bar on the 12th Street side. Its “Hey Joey!” mural painted by L.A.-based Gents of Desire won acclaim from art critics and brought a measure of fame if not fortune to Joey Clams. The mural was painted over when the spot became Nathan’s Boardwalk location, but many photos of “Hey Joey!” can be found on flickr.
