Weekend: Go Fly a Kite at Coney Island International Kite Festival

The beach belongs to kite flyers this weekend! On Saturday and Sunday, September 26 and 27, from 9:30am – 5pm, you can go fly a kite or buy a kite and learn to fly it on the beach between West 10th Street and Stillwell Avenue. Professionals and amateurs will be flying one line, dual line, and quad line kites. The annual event is free and all ages are welcome to participate or spectate.

If you go, you’ll want to take photos of the colorful sea creature-shaped kites in the sky. In past years, we’ve seen a green octopus with flowing tentacles, a giant crab, schools of tropical fish, and a scuba diver. These photos were shot at last year’s festival by Ron Marcisak, one of the organizers of the New York Kite Aerial Photography Meet-up Group.

This weekend is also the Coney Island Hot Rod and Tattoo Show at Coney Island USA and the 34th Annual Great Irish Fair at MCU Park. The rides at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park and Luna Park are open weekends and holidays through November 1st.

Though the beach is now closed for swimming, sunbathing is allowed and encouraged. Says photographer Ron Marcisak of his photo shown below: “NO PHOTOS PLEASE. See the beach bag? Ironic?”

On Saturday morning ATZ tweeted: Hope to see some KAP – Kite Aerial Photography – of Coney Island from this weekend’s Kite Flying Festival! We got our wish: flickr member “Ron’s KAP” uploaded this splendid aerial view of Coney’s amusement area from West 12th Street to West 10th. You can see Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park, the new Luna Park, and the Cyclone Roller Coaster. We have a total of 59 rides now in Coney, including 19 in the new park. The rides of 12th Street Amusements and McCullough’s Kiddie Park can also be seen on 12th St.

According to the photographer, “The wind was out of the NNW to WNW from 4-8 (maybe 9) MPH and some gentle gusts throughout that range. The only thing that would lift my rig is the ITW Triton.”

Which one of these elegant rigs did Ron’s KAP send into the sky over Coney? Perhaps he’ll return tomorrow and show us! Sunday’s forecast: Breezy with highs in the mid 60s. Northeast winds 15 to 20 mph. In the photo below, American Kitefliers Association (AKA) members can be seen on the beach. Kite festival organizer Leucio Parrella’s red kite is aloft on the right.

Go Fly A Kite at Coney Island’s 2nd Annual Kite Festival!!

UPDATE…the 2015 Coney Island Kite Festival is this weekend, September 26 and 27. Go fly your kite or go take photos – FREE!

Last August in Coney Island, photographer Norman Blake photographed this airborne octopus and his skydiver friend. This weekend in Coney, you’re invited to go fly a kite at the Coney Island Kite Festival. The event will be held this Saturday and Sunday, October 2nd and 3rd, from 10 am to 5 pm on Coney Island’s beach. It’s free!

“This will be our first big official event of this year, ” said Leucio Parrella, a member of the American Kitefliers Association (AKA), who adds that the festival of 2009 was cancelled. “Our first test run of the Coney Island Kite Festival was the weekend before Thanksgiving of 2008. We had bad weather.” The good news for kitefliers and their friends is this weekend’s forecast is sunny, in the 60s.

From the official description of “The 2nd Coney Island Kite Fest” on the AKA calendar:

Fly for fun. On the beach there will be big kites such as an octopus kite. We also will have dual kites and Quad kites. Large area for free flights of kites for everyone. Parrella told ATZ there will be three kite fields: “Two fields for AKA members and one field for public use. AKA Dual Kites and Quad kite field is 300 x 300 square feet and starts from West Bay 8 Street, AKA Big One Line Kites is from about West Bay 10 Street (Playground Area ) to Stillwell Avenue, and Public fly field is between Stillwell Avenue and West Bay 15 Street to the Fishing Pier on the beach.”

The festival is sanctioned by the American Kitefliers Association (AKA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to sharing kiting with the world.
