On Tuesday ATZ had the scoop that the Dragon Wagon Kiddie Coaster from Michael Jackson’s private amusement park at Neverland Ranch was in Coney Island for the summer. After news of the ride’s history spread, the park’s operators set up a tribute to Jackson. On the eve of Fourth of July, a DJ was playing the King of Pop’s greatest hits and memorial posters were attached to the front of the ride.
Meanwhile, over at Stillwell and Surf, “Thriller” was blaring from the giant speakers that were set up on Friday night in preparation for Nathan’s Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest.
Sadly, whenever I pass by, this ride has no customers. I saw no ad there saying this ride was at Neverland. I hope the ride will get some riders.
Myron,
I heard the MJ pix were gone, so when I went by last week I asked the ride attendant what happened to the them. He said the pix had been stolen overnight! I pointed out that the park is gated and locked, but he said someone climbed the fence.
The pix were put up on the ride a week after I wrote about the ride’s Neverland provenance on my blog and news spread. The ride’s owner told me he got the idea to have the tribute. On July 4th weeeknd a DJ was set up next to the ride playing MJ’s music, so perhaps he provided the pix.
I really wouldn’t worry about the ride not doing business. Jackson fans are following the news about the Neverland rides and know about the Dragon Wagon in Coney. You probably went on an off day or time. I’ve been there numerous times, and guess what– I’ve never seen that beautiful carousel set up next to it in operation– though I’ve taken many pix of it! The carousel is not from Neverland though, it came out of a mall in Calif.
