Two of Coney Island’s longtime family-owned businesses are next-door neighbors on Surf Avenue. ATZ happened to get this shot of their colorful marquees at dusk on Easter Sunday.
The Eldorado, Coney Island’s Disco Palace of Bumper Cars, opened in 1973 and is owned by Sandy and Sheila Fitlin. You can read about the history of the Eldorado in an interview that we did with their son Scott Fitlin last year.
Denny’s Dennis Corines has owned and operated the ice cream shop since 1968. Specialties include fresh crispy popcorn, candy apples and pistachio-banana soft serve.

Beautiful photo!!!
Thanks, Linds. It was a lucky capture. I just happened to glance out the door of Bratva, the bar on the north side of Surf, where I was having dinner, and see the lights and rain!
That’s a brilliant shot. Love it!
beautiful
Tricia,
Do you know if Dennis Corines dad operated a souvenir shop under the subway back in the ’60s? If so, I hung out with him (Dennis and his sister Maria) and used to spend the weekend on Stilwell Ave at his shop.
Could you find out for me? It’s so many years ago, he won’t remember me, but I’d like to know, if possible. Thanks, i appreciate it.
Diane
Sure, I will ask Dennis next time I see him there. He’s not there every day.
Is it true that Denny’s Ice Cream Shop is going out of business? I’m still trying to find out whether Dennis had a sister Maria.
Denny has has the building up for sale for awhile because he wants to retire.
Will try to remember to ask Denny about a sister. Saw him yesterday for the first time in awhile.
