Fireworks and snow?! Instead of doing a Best Photos of 2011, ATZ is featuring some images that we missed during the hectic summer season. It’s also “snowing” on our blog through January 2, thanks to the Holiday Engineers at WordPress.com.

“The new ‘IN’ place to be on a Friday fireworks night is THE PIER,” wrote Coney Island photographer Bruce Handy on the Friday night in July when he took this stunning photo.

The Coney Island tradition of Friday night fireworks begins for the 2012 season in mid-June. That’s six months away, fireworks fans. Coney Island’s rides and attractions open for the season on the last weekend of March, which is Palm Sunday Weekend. That’s just over three months away. Mark your new 2012 calendars!

Nathan's Famous

Instead of doing a Best Photos of 2011 in December, we’re going to feature some images that we either overlooked or didn’t have time to upload to flickr during the busy summer. The signage of Nathan’s Famous, a fave subject for us and many who regularly photograph Coney Island, is today’s better-late-than-never “Photo of the Day.”

Nathan’s was in the news on Monday when the Jericho, NY-based company announced they will buy back up to $11 million worth of their common stock–up to 500,000 shares– beginning on December 8th. “The Company intends to fund this tender offer with cash on hand. At September 25, 2011, the Company had approximately $15.2 million of cash and cash equivalents and $16.9 million of marketable securities,” according to the press release.

At $3.80 per hot dog (including tax), $11 million will also buy you 2,894,736 hot dogs. Thatsa lotta beef, but last year Nathan’s, which started out selling franks for a nickel in 1916, sold over 425 million of their world-famous hot dogs.

In 2012, Nathan’s Famous will open a huge new restaurant at the corner of West 12th on the Coney Island Boardwalk at Gyro Corner Clam Bar’s former location. Their satellite restaurant at the corner of Stillwell on the Boardwalk has closed and the signage was removed last week.

Children's Drawings

Children's Drawings on Display at Coney Island Library. October 3, 2011. Photo © Tricia Vita/me-myself-i via flickr

This delightful children’s eye-view of the neighborhood is on display at the Coney Island Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library on Mermaid Avenue. Don’t you just love the way the Wonder Wheel, Cyclone and Brooklyn Flyer are stacked atop a theater building in defiance of perspective? It reminds us of circus acrobats balancing on each other shoulders. But it really does look that way in Coney’s amusement zone, where 62 rides and other attractions are jam-packed into three city blocks.

Also depicted are the Aquarium, Gargiulo’s Restaurant, Dunkin Donuts and a pizzeria. There’s a shopping mall too! Nope, Joe Sitt didn’t open a mall in Coney Island while you were sleeping. Not yet. The kids managed to squeeze Century 21, which happens to be in neighboring Bay Ridge, into their mural. The art is the work of children from the YWCA at P.S. 90 Edna Cohen School After School Program, which serves 120 students from kindergarten to fifth grade.
