If you’re a wimp when it comes to thrill rides, this on-ride POV vid is your chance to go for a virtual spin on Zamperla’s new Air Race. Woo hoo! From our article about Luna Park in the August issue of IAAPA Funworld: “Our intention is to have the latest rides that we develop in our park,” says Valerio Ferrari (CEO of Zamperla USA and Central Amusements International), who points to the Air Race, a prototype designed by Mega Disk’O creator Gianbattista Zambelli. The thrill ride, which sends riders upside down at up to 4 g forces, made its world debut in Coney Island.

Zamperla’s Luna Park in Coney Island opened on Memorial Day weekend. The park is currently open weekends through Halloween.

An off-ride POV video (also by Coaster Force) conveys the visual impact of the ride. When you’re standing at the perimeter, it really does feel like the aerobatic planes are diving towards you!

The winners of the first annual LunaPic Contest were announced with fanfare on LunaTic Day (Friday) in Coney Island’s Luna Park. Jim McDonnell was awarded the grand prize in the film category for this fast-paced, 57-second video of Luna’s rides in action. Contest rules specified that entries be between 30 and 60 seconds in length. Check out Jim’s “Coney Island Dancing” video which we posted on ATZ yesterday and his photo gallery of amusement park photos. As we’ve already said to him: Bravissimo! You’ve really outdone yourself this summer with your pix and vids of Coney!

The grand prize winners in the Lunapic Contest’s film and photo categories receive $500 cash, four 4-hour wristbands, and a Luna bag with merchandise and souvenirs. In the photo category, the grand prize was awarded to Paul Gerace’s Best Overview shot. The first prize winners in the individual categories were Eric Kowalsky, Most Artistic; Sylvia Rosenbaum, Best Close-Up; Mike Cherry, Best Nighttime; Janelle Bara, Best Overview. They receive wristbands and the Luna bag of goodies. Congrats to all! The winning photos may be viewed on the park’s Facebook page.

Timothy Haskell, the Off-Broadway theater director whose annual Nightmare Haunted House in NoHo bills itself as New York’s Most Horrifying Haunted House is coming to Coney Island for Halloween.  On August 11, Haskell tweeted: “got the gig to turn Luna Park in Coney Island into a Halloween wonderland. Opens October 15th. Pretty cool.”

Yesterday, Haskell had a meeting with Zamperla/Central Amusements International, the operators of Luna Park, according to his twitter feed:  “Going to Luna Park (coney island) to discuss my concepts for the haunted theme I will be implementing. It’s going to be scarecrows!”

Although Luna Park has yet to announce details of their Halloween festivities, the amusement park, which is open daily through Labor Day, will remain open weekends through Halloween, according to a recent post on the Luna Park NYC Facebook page. When reached for comment, Valerio Ferrari, who is president of both CAI and Zamperla’s United States branch, said in two weeks they’ll know for certain if the project is a go for Halloween 2010.

In October Coney Island USA will stage their annual Creepshow at the Freakshow haunted house tour of CIUSA’s building. The show is written and directed by CIUSA founder and Mermaid Parade creator Dick Zigun, who says this year’s theme is “The Ride Inspector’s Nightmare”! The Creepshow’s designer is Kate Dale, whose fabulous creations for the Mermaid Parade have won her “Best Mermaid” and “Best Float” more times than anyone else in the history of the parade.

Let the countdown till Halloween in Coney Island begin!
